Amigurumi

The Japanese craft of crocheting small stuffed figures, usually worked in continuous rounds of single crochet at a tight gauge so the fabric holds stuffing without gaps.

Tight gauge is the defining feature rather than a preference: a loose fabric shows the stuffing through it and distorts the shape. Most patterns therefore call for a hook one or two sizes smaller than the yarn band suggests.
