Blocking

Wetting or steaming a finished piece and pinning it to shape while it dries. Blocking evens out stitch tension, opens up lace, and settles the fabric so it stops changing size.

It is also why gauge must be measured after blocking rather than before: many fibres relax or bloom on their first wash, and a swatch that read 18 stitches per 4 inches can settle at 17.
