Stitch repeat

The number of stitches a pattern uses before it starts again. A pattern described as "a multiple of six plus two" repeats every six stitches, with two extra border stitches that sit outside the repeat.

This is why a cast on is usually not a round number. Cast on a multiple of the repeat plus the border, and the piece will be a whole number of repeats wide instead of ending mid pattern.
