What the calculators and guides on this site are and are not, and where you must verify for yourself.

Everything on Handcraft is provided for general information and planning. It is not professional advice of any kind, and it is not a substitute for the guidance of a qualified person or for the documentation that comes with the materials you buy.

The calculators produce estimates

Every tool on this site estimates. It works from the numbers you enter and from stated assumptions about waste, gauge, density, layout and typical practice. Real projects vary, sometimes a great deal. A yarn estimate can be short by a skein. A board count can leave you one piece short. A wax calculation can be out by several percent because two batches of the same wax are not identical.

Before you spend money on the strength of a figure here, do the cheap test: a swatch, a sample pour, a single bar, one board. That is what the assumptions sections on each tool are pointing you towards.

Materials, tools and machinery

This site does not tell you how to operate any tool or machine, and it does not give workshop safety instructions. Cutting, sanding, melting, pouring, firing and everything else carries real risk. Follow the manufacturer's instructions, use the guarding and the protective equipment the work requires, and get proper training where the work calls for it.

Chemicals: soap, resin and anything else that reacts

Sodium hydroxide, epoxy resin and hardener, solvents, pigments, essential oils and fragrances all carry real hazards. This site provides planning and costing tools for those crafts and deliberately does not provide formulation maths or handling procedure.

In particular: no figure on this site replaces a proper lye calculator for soap or the manufacturer's mixing ratio for resin. Those two things govern whether a batch is safe and whether it will cure, and they must come from a reliable source rather than from a general estimate. Follow the safety data sheet, work with ventilation, protect your skin and eyes, and verify your formulation before you make anything you intend to use or sell.

Food, skin and children

Nothing on this site is a statement that a project is food safe, skin safe, child safe or non-toxic. Whether a finished item is suitable for a particular use depends on your materials, your process and your local rules, and that is your determination to make, not ours.

Selling what you make

Legal requirements for handmade goods, including labelling, allergen declaration, cosmetic regulation and toy safety, vary by country and change over time. The pricing and cost tools here do the arithmetic. They do not tell you whether you may legally sell something, and complying with the rules where you trade is your responsibility.

Money

The business tools calculate from figures you supply. They do not give financial, tax, accounting or legal advice. Fees, tax rules and marketplace terms change, so check the current terms of any platform you sell through rather than relying on a default value in a form.

Accuracy and availability

We work to keep the reference data accurate and the formulas correct, and we correct errors when they are found. We cannot promise that everything is free of error, or that the site will always be available. If you find a mistake, telling us is genuinely useful, and the contact page explains how.
