Canvas Area Calculator

Surface area of a canvas, the fabric to buy with the wrap included, and the standard size it matches.

Canvas is sold in standard sizes and by the metre, and the two do not agree by accident. A canvas listed as 40 by 50 centimetres is the size of the image face, but the fabric has to wrap over the sides and onto the back of the bars, so the piece you cut is larger. This calculator gives the painting area, the fabric area including the wrap, and the amount of fabric to order from a roll.

The image face, not including the folded edge.

Stretcher profile depth

The depth of the bar the canvas is wrapped around. Gallery profile gives a deeper, frameless edge.

The fabric that folds onto the back of the bar and takes the staples.

Common roll widths are 150 cm and 210 cm. Used for the nesting and offcut figures.

Optional. Used for the fabric cost of the piece and of the offcuts.

Frequently asked questions

How much bigger than the canvas should I cut the fabric?
Add the stretcher profile depth and the fold allowance to each side. A 40 by 50 centimetre face on a 1.8 centimetre bar with a 2.5 centimetre fold needs fabric of 48.6 by 58.6 centimetres, because 4.3 centimetres goes on each side. A 3.8 centimetre gallery profile needs 6.3 centimetres on each side, so 52.6 by 62.6 centimetres. Cutting the fabric as the face size leaves nothing to grip and nothing to staple.
What are the standard canvas sizes?
In metric, the common figure sizes are 10 by 15, 13 by 18, 18 by 24, 24 by 30, 30 by 40, 40 by 50, 50 by 60, 60 by 80 and 80 by 100 centimetres. Landscape sizes run 20 by 25 up to 100 by 150. Imperial sizes follow a similar ladder in inches, from 6 by 8 up to 48 by 60. Ready made frames, boxes and courier price bands are all built around these, so a canvas a centimetre off a standard size costs more to frame and to ship.
How many canvases can I get from a metre of canvas roll?
It depends on the roll width and the nesting. A 1.5 metre wide roll fits three 40 by 50 canvases across at 48.6 centimetres each plus a cutting gap, and one lengthwise per metre, so three canvases per metre before trimming. A 2.1 metre roll of the same size nests four across. Work out the number across the roll and the number along a metre and multiply, then compare that figure with buying ready made canvases on offer.
Is primed or unprimed canvas better?
Primed canvas is ready to paint, takes less oil out of the first layer and is more dimensionally stable, which is why most acrylic and oil painters use it. Unprimed canvas is cheaper by the metre and lets you choose your own primer, which matters if you want a particular tooth or a coloured ground. The area arithmetic is the same either way, but a primed roll is thicker and takes up more room on a roll and in storage.
Does canvas weight matter for the calculation?
Not for the area, but it matters for everything else. Cotton duck is usually 10 to 12 ounces per square yard and linen is heavier and more expensive, so a roll of the same nominal length weighs quite differently and the shipping cost follows the weight. A heavier canvas also takes more primer and is less likely to dimple between stretcher bars. The roll label states the weight per square yard or per square metre; use it when comparing two rolls rather than comparing the price alone.
