Packaging Cost Calculator

Add up what one parcel of packaging costs, per unit and per order, and see what share of the price it takes.

Packaging is a small cost per item that becomes a large cost over a year, and it is the line most often left out of a handmade costing entirely. This calculator adds the box, the wrap, the label, the bag and any insert into a cost per unit and per order, then reports it as a share of the selling price. It is the tool that answers whether the branded box is worth what it costs.

Frequently asked questions

How much should packaging cost per order?
Between one and two and a half dollars for a small handmade parcel, which is usually three to eight percent of the order value. Under three percent the cost is invisible in the price; above ten percent the customer is noticeably paying for the box. The split between protection and presentation matters more than the total: a branded box that costs eighty five cents where a plain one costs forty five is a marketing decision rather than a shipping one.
Should I count a dust bag as packaging or as part of the product?
For a leather item a dust bag is arguably part of the product, because it is how the customer stores the piece and it affects how they perceive its quality. Either way, the cost has to appear somewhere in the price. What matters is not which column it sits in but that it is counted. This calculator lets it sit on the per item line, and the share of the selling price tells you whether the whole packaging bill is proportionate.
Is branded packaging worth the extra cost?
Sometimes. Branded packaging raises the perceived quality of an item and increases the chance a customer photographs it and posts it, which is free marketing. Against that, a branded box can cost twice a plain one and the branded tissue, sticker and card add more. Work out the annual cost of the presentation layer and compare it with the number of repeat orders and reviews you get. If the presentation pays for itself in those, keep it.
How much packaging should I buy at once?
About a year of cover and no more. Buying in bulk lowers the unit cost sharply, but a thousand boxes is real money tied up and real shelf space occupied, and packaging that sits for two years gets dusty and out of date. If the bulk price is much better, consider splitting an order with another local maker. This calculator reports how many years of cover a bulk quantity represents so an overbuy is visible.
What does packaging cost over a year?
Multiply the cost per order by the number of orders. A maker doing three hundred orders a year at two dollars of packaging per order spends six hundred dollars, and that is a figure worth seeing written down. It is usually the second or third largest cost in a small handmade business after materials and labour, and it is the one most often missing from a costing spreadsheet entirely.
