Frequently asked questions

How do I price a crochet item?
Start with what it costs you: materials at what you paid, plus your time at a rate you would accept for any other work. Then divide by one minus your target margin to get a price. A 40 percent margin on a 100 dollar production cost gives about 167 dollars, not 140, because the margin is a share of the price.
What if the price is more than people will pay?
That is useful information rather than a failure. It usually means the design needs to be faster to make, the materials cheaper, or the item sold to a market that values the work. Reducing your hourly rate to zero to hit a price is not a business, it is a donation.
Should I include the pattern cost in every item?
Only the first time, or spread it across the items you make from it. If you paid 8 dollars for a pattern and sell twenty of the design, the pattern adds 40 cents to each. Including the full cost in every item overstates your costs and leads you to overprice.
How many hours does a crochet blanket take?
A throw in worsted weight commonly takes 20 to 40 hours. A large blanket in finer yarn can take well over 100. Track your actual hours on one project: almost everyone underestimates their speed, and the real figure is what makes your pricing honest.
