Knitting Project Cost Calculator

Total the cost of a knitting project including needles and notions, then see a suggested selling price.

Knitting projects carry costs that a yarn-only estimate misses: needles bought for the project, stitch markers, blocking mats and the pattern itself. This calculator captures all of them and turns the total into a price you could defend.

Frequently asked questions

How much should I charge for a hand knit sweater?
The arithmetic is uncomfortable but simple. A DK sweater takes most knitters 40 to 80 hours. At 15 dollars an hour that is 600 to 1,200 dollars of labour before yarn. This is why hand knit garments rarely sell at a price that pays a full hourly rate, and why many makers sell patterns, accessories or small items instead.
Should I count needles as a project cost?
Count them only if you bought them for this project and will not use them again, or apportion them across the projects that use them. Being consistent matters more than the choice itself, because inconsistent costing makes two similar projects look incomparable.
Is it worth knitting to sell?
For accessories, toys and small home items, sometimes. For garments, only at the high end of the market or when the design is your own. Run the numbers above honestly before committing to a large batch, and look at what comparable makers charge rather than what mass produced equivalents cost.
How do I speed up my knitting?
Continental and lever knitting are both faster than English throwing for most people, and avoiding frequent needle changes helps more than technique. Time yourself on a 10 by 10 centimetre square of the actual project to get a realistic rate rather than guessing.
