Troy ounce

The unit precious metals are priced in, equal to about 31.1 grams. It is heavier than the ordinary avoirdupois ounce of about 28.3 grams, which is a difference of nearly ten percent.

This matters when you convert a metal price per troy ounce into a cost per gram for a piece, because using the ordinary ounce understates the cost of the metal in the piece.
