Clothing Measurement Converter

Convert body measurements between inches and centimetres, and read them across US, UK and European clothing size systems.

Measurements arrive in inches from a US pattern and in centimetres from a European one, and the size number on the envelope means something different again. This converter changes a single measurement between the units and shows which standard pattern size it corresponds to, so you can pick a size from a tape measure rather than a guess.

Frequently asked questions

How do I convert my measurements to a pattern size?
Measure your full bust, your natural waist and your full hip over light clothing with the tape level, then compare each against the pattern size chart. Choose the size that matches the measurement the garment is fitted by: bust for a bodice, hip for a skirt or trousers. If your bust is one size and your hip another, which is common, grade between the two at the waistline.
Why is my pattern size different from my shop size?
Pattern sizes are drafted to body measurements and shop sizes use vanity sizing, which has drifted steadily downward over decades. A woman who buys a UK 12 in a shop often needs a pattern UK 16. Every sewing teacher says the same thing: ignore the number you wear and choose by the measurement chart, even when it feels wrong.
What is my waist measurement in centimetres if it is 30 inches?
30 inches is 76.2 centimetres. In practice you would write 76 cm, because no tape measure is read to a millimetre. For the measurements that matter in sewing, 1 inch is 2.54 cm, so 5/8 inch is 1.6 cm, 1/4 inch is 0.6 cm and 1/2 inch is 1.27 cm.
How much ease should I add to my measurements?
A woven blouse or dress needs about 3 inches at the bust and 2 inches at the hip for a comfortable fit. A fitted garment can use 2 inches at the bust. A coat needs 6 inches or more so it can go over other clothes. Knit patterns usually build in negative ease, so a knit pattern size is smaller than the equivalent woven one by design.
