Fabric Length Converter

Convert fabric lengths between inches, feet, yards, centimetres and metres, with the common fabric fractions shown as decimals.

Fabric is sold in yards in the United States and in metres almost everywhere else, patterns are drafted in inches or centimetres, and a shop will cut in eighths of a yard. This converter changes a length between all five units at once and shows the decimal equivalents of the fractions you will actually be asked for at the counter.

Frequently asked questions

How many inches is a yard of fabric?
A yard is exactly 36 inches, so a quarter yard is 9 inches and a half yard is 18 inches. Shops will normally cut an eighth of a yard, which is 4.5 inches. A fat quarter is a different thing entirely: it is a half yard cut in half across the width, usually finishing around 18 by 21 inches rather than 9 by 44.
Is a metre the same as a yard?
No, a metre is about 39.37 inches and a yard is 36, so a metre is roughly 3.4 inches longer, about 9 percent. If a pattern asks for 3 yards and you buy 3 metres you have a useful margin; if it asks for 3 metres and you buy 3 yards you are short by about 10 inches, which is often enough to lose a sleeve.
How do I convert centimetres to inches for a pattern?
Multiply centimetres by 0.3937, or divide by 2.54. A 150 cm fabric width is 59 inches, which is a standard 58/60 inch bolt, and a 45 inch bolt is 114 cm. For seam allowances the numbers to remember are 1.5 cm for 5/8 inch, 1 cm for 3/8 inch and 0.6 cm for 1/4 inch.
How much is 1/8 of a yard in centimetres?
An eighth of a yard is 4.5 inches, which is 11.4 centimetres. Metric shops cut in 10 cm or 5 cm steps, so ask for 15 cm and take the small extra rather than asking for 11 cm. Over several cuts the rounding is always in your favour if you round up.
