Garland Length Calculator

Stems, bunches and foliage for a garland, with the overlap and the hanging allowance built in.

A garland is measured by its finished length, but it is bought by the stems that go into it, and the two are connected by density and overlap. A greenery garland at 6 stems per foot is light and airy, while a dense mixed garland at 10 stems per foot eats flowers quickly. This calculator gives the stems per metre, the bunches to order and the cost, with a separate allowance for the sections that have to overlap at a fixing point.

Measure the run it has to cover, not the material you will use.

Twenty stems per metre is 6 per foot and light, 26 is 8 per foot and standard, 33 is 10 per foot and dense.

Ten percent for a straight run, fifteen to twenty for a swagged or spiral installation.

Flowers and berries are accents. One every 20 to 30 cm is usual. Set high for a foliage only garland.

Foliage is usually sold by the bunch rather than the stem.

Frequently asked questions

How many stems do I need for a garland?
About 6 to 10 stems per foot of base, which is 20 to 33 per metre. A 2.4 metre mantelpiece garland at 8 stems per foot needs about 63 foliage stems, or 70 with a ten percent allowance for the ends and the fixings, which is seven bunches of ten. A dense garland at 10 per foot needs about 79, and a light one at 6 per foot about 47.
How much extra should I allow for overlap?
Ten percent on a straight run, and fifteen to twenty percent if the garland is swagged, spiralled up a banister or tied at frequent intervals. Greenery is wired in overlapping bundles so each bundle covers 15 to 25 centimetres of the base, and every fixing point needs the material to pass round it and overlap itself. A garland that is doubled back over a hook uses twice the base length for the same visible run.
How many flowers go in a garland?
Far fewer than people expect. Flowers, berries and speciality stems are accents rather than the body of the garland, placed one every 20 to 30 centimetres in small groups of two or three stems. A 2.4 metre garland takes about 30 flower stems at that spacing, against 70 foliage stems. If flowers are more than about 40 percent of the stems, what you are building is a flower arrangement on a rope rather than a garland.
What foliage is cheapest for a garland?
Evergreen conifer, bay, eucalyptus and ruscus are all inexpensive by the bunch and hold up well, and conifer in particular is cheap in winter when it is in season. Variegated and speciality foliage costs several times more per bunch. Because foliage makes up the bulk of the stems, the choice of greenery moves the total cost more than the choice of flowers does, which is the opposite of what most people assume.
How much does a garland weigh?
A mixed evergreen garland runs at roughly 30 grams per stem, so a 2.4 metre garland at 8 stems per foot is around 2 kilograms before any flowers or berries, and appreciably more once the greenery is wet or if it has been wired onto a heavy base. That weight matters for the fixings: any hook, adhesive strip or support has to be rated for the loaded weight, and fixtures on a building should follow the venue requirements and the manufacturer instructions.
