Handmade Leather Pricing Calculator

Price a leather item on MARGIN, with marketplace fees taken off the selling price and a clear warning when the numbers cannot work.

Selling through a marketplace changes the arithmetic, because the fee comes off the selling price rather than being added to the cost. This calculator prices a leather item on margin, so a forty percent margin really is forty percent of the price, and it deducts the platform fee and the payment processing from that price before asking whether the remainder covers the cost. Where fees and margin together exceed the whole selling price, it says so plainly rather than returning a negative number.

Leather at the cost per usable square foot, plus thread, hardware, lining and packaging.

All of it, including marking, cutting, skiving and edge finishing.

A share of the material and labour cost for the workshop, tools, lighting and the time spent on listings and messages.

Taken off the selling price, not added to the cost.

Usually a percentage plus a fixed charge per transaction.

The flat part of the payment processing charge. It hurts small sales far more than large ones.

A MARGIN, which is a share of the selling price. Forty five percent margin means the profit is 45 percent of the price, which is a much higher price than a 45 percent markup.

Optional. Leave at zero to skip the comparison.

Frequently asked questions

Why does a 45 percent margin give a much higher price than a 45 percent markup?
Because they are measured against different things. A margin is a share of the selling price, so the price is cost divided by one minus 0.45, which is cost divided by 0.55, or 1.818 times the cost. A markup is a multiple of cost, so a 45 percent markup is 1.45 times the cost. On 100 dollars of cost the margin price is 181.82 and the markup price is 145, a difference of nearly 37 dollars for the same headline percentage.
How do marketplace fees affect my price?
The fee comes off the selling price, so the price has to be divided by one minus the fee and the margin together. A 15 percent commission and a 3 percent processing fee take 18 percent of the price, so a 45 percent margin needs the cost divided by 0.37 rather than 0.55, which is a third higher again. Fees are why an item that is profitable on a market stall can lose money online at the same price.
What happens if the fees and margin add up to more than the price?
Then the request is arithmetically impossible and this calculator reports it as impossible rather than returning a negative price. A 30 percent commission, a 20 percent processing fee and a 60 percent margin add up to 110 percent, so there is nothing left to pay for the leather before you even start. The only answers are a lower margin, a cheaper platform or a higher priced product. Reducing the margin is usually the honest one.
Why does the fixed transaction charge matter so much?
Because it is a flat amount, so it is a much bigger share of a small sale than of a large one. Thirty cents on a ten dollar item is 3 percent, while the same thirty cents on a two hundred dollar item is 0.15 percent. That is why small leather goods such as key fobs and card holders are hard to sell profitably one at a time on a platform with a fixed charge, and why selling them in a set of three changes the arithmetic entirely.
Should I include my own time in the cost before applying the margin?
Yes, always. Pricing a leather item on materials alone and then applying a margin produces a price that pays for the leather and nothing else. The labour cost is the hours at the bench multiplied by the rate you want to be paid, and it belongs in the cost exactly like the hide does. The profit per hour figure this tool reports is then the real test of whether the price works.
