Jewelry Profit Calculator

Work out the profit on one piece and on a whole batch, the margin it leaves, and what you actually earn per hour after marketplace fees.

A busy month does not always mean a profitable one. This calculator takes a selling price and the cost of making the piece, subtracts the marketplace and payment fees that come off the top, and shows the profit per piece, the profit across the batch, the margin, and the hourly rate the whole thing really pays once your making time is counted. That last figure is usually the one worth acting on.

Frequently asked questions

How do I work out profit on handmade jewellery?
Take the selling price, subtract the marketplace commission and the payment processing fee from that price, then subtract what the piece cost you to make. A 140 dollar necklace with 13 percent in fees leaves about 122 dollars, and if the piece cost 52 dollars to make, the profit is 70 dollars per piece, a margin of 50 percent. If your own time was not included in that 52 dollars, the 70 dollars is your pay rather than your profit.
What is a good profit margin for handmade jewellery?
Most makers aim for 35 to 50 percent of the selling price after materials and fees, with the higher end for designs that are hard to copy or that use premium materials. Below about 25 percent there is very little room for a refund, a breakage or a slow month, and the business is one bad batch away from working for nothing. Compare margins between designs rather than only looking at the profit per piece.
Why is my hourly rate so low?
Because the hours that are not at the bench are real hours. If twenty pieces take sixty hours in total once photographing, listing, packing and admin are counted, then a 1,400 dollar batch profit is about 23 dollars an hour rather than the 70 dollars an hour the bench time alone suggests. Raising prices, selling in multiples or simplifying the packing routine all move that figure, and so does designing pieces that take less administration.
Do fees apply to postage as well?
On most marketplaces commission is charged on the order total including whatever the buyer pays for postage, so an offer of free delivery comes out of your margin twice, once as the postage and once as the commission on the inflated order total. Check the current fee schedule for the platform you use and treat postage, packaging, refunds and breakages as separate costs, because this calculator models the sale itself.
