Bead Calculator

Work out how many beads fill a strand length, how many beads fit in an inch, and how many strands a pack of beads will make.

A strand of beads is arithmetic: the length you want divided by the size of each bead. This calculator does that division for seed beads and round beads alike, tells you how many beads sit in an inch of the strand, and works out how many strands a pack of beads yields so you can buy the right quantity once. The size table covers the common seed bead sizes, whose names are a historical gauge rather than a measurement.

Frequently asked questions

How many beads do I need for a 7 inch bracelet?
Divide the length in millimetres by the bead diameter. Seven inches is 178 millimetres, so it takes about 85 size 11/0 seed beads at 2.1 millimetres, 59 size 8/0 at 3 millimetres, 30 beads of 6 millimetres, or 22 beads of 8 millimetres. Add a bead or two for the clasp area and round up when you buy.
What size is an 11/0 seed bead in millimetres?
About 2.1 millimetres in diameter, and roughly 12 beads measure an inch. An 8/0 is about 3 millimetres, a 6/0 about 4 millimetres, and a 15/0 about 1.5 millimetres. The numbers come from the old seed bead gauge, so a bigger number means a smaller bead, which is the opposite of what most people assume.
How many beads are in a strand?
It depends entirely on the size. A standard 16 inch strand holds around 190 size 11/0 seed beads, about 135 size 8/0, or roughly 50 beads of 8 millimetres. Sellers usually list the count or the length of the strand, and if they list only the length, dividing it by the bead diameter gives the count.
Does the thread or cord change the bead count?
It does not change the count, but it changes the finished length. A thick cord or knots between beads adds to the strand, so a knotted design at 6 millimetres can measure noticeably longer than the same beads strung tight. If you are knotting, allow for the knot in the finished length rather than expecting the beads alone to fill it.
