Necklace Length Guide

Turn a necklace style into a finished length and a bead or link count for the size of bead you are using.

Choker, princess, matinee, opera and rope are names for lengths rather than styles, and each one sits in a different place on the body. This guide converts the name into the length to make, then into the number of beads or links that length needs so you can order materials once. It also shows where each length falls so you can choose the name that actually suits the design.

Frequently asked questions

What length is a princess necklace?
A princess necklace is 17 to 19 inches and sits on the collarbone, which is where most pendants look right. It is the most common length sold, and it is a good default if you do not know the wearer. A choker at 15 inches and a matinee at 22 inches are the next sizes either side.
How many beads do I need for a 17.5 inch necklace?
Divide 17.5 inches, or 445 millimetres, by the bead diameter. That is about 74 beads of 6 millimetres, 111 of 4 millimetres, 56 beads of 8 millimetres, or around 210 size 11/0 seed beads at 2.1 millimetres. Add the clasp allowance and round up, and buy a few extra for the ones that arrive with blocked holes.
What is the difference between a matinee and an opera length?
A matinee is 20 to 24 inches and ends on the upper chest, while an opera is 28 to 34 inches and reaches the bust. Both are often worn over a garment rather than against the skin, and an opera length is the classic length for a pearl or beaded strand that is doubled. Anything from 36 inches upwards is called a rope.
Does the clasp length count in the necklace measurement?
Yes. A necklace is measured around its whole length including the clasp, so a design advertised at 18 inches includes the clasp and its jump rings. Allow about half an inch for a standard clasp and more for a large decorative one, otherwise the finished piece hangs shorter than the pattern or the listing promised.
