Soap Label Calculator

Label size for a rectangular bar or a round slice from its dimensions, with the wrap allowance, and how many labels a sheet yields.

A label that is a quarter of an inch short will not meet at the back of the bar, and one that is too tall runs over the edge and creases. This calculator turns the dimensions of a bar or a round slice into the label size to order, allowing for the wrap, the overlap and a safe margin, and works out how many labels one sheet will yield.

Bar shape
Label wraps around

A rectangular bar can be labelled around its long axis or its short axis.

Rectangular bars.

Rectangular bars.

The dimension the label height runs across, and the full height of a round slice.

Measured where the label will sit.

Where the two ends of the label meet.

Keeps the label clear of the top and the bottom edge of the bar.

Frequently asked questions

What size label fits a bar of soap?
Measure the bar, add the overlap, and keep the label at least an eighth of an inch clear of each edge. A 3.5 by 2.5 by 1 inch bar labelled the whole way around its length and width travels 12 inches, so with a half inch overlap the label is about 12.5 inches long by 0.75 inches tall, and that is longer than the 11 inch side of a Letter sheet, so a full wrap needs a custom cut or a wide format printer. A front panel that covers the 3.5 inch face with a quarter inch fold on each end is 4.25 inches plus a little overlap, which prints on a standard sheet. Cut either shape from paper and wrap a real bar before ordering anything printed.
How much overlap should a soap label have?
About a quarter to a half an inch is normal. Too little and the ends lift as the label settles against a slightly irregular bar, too much wastes label stock and can make the back look untidy. On a thin slice a quarter inch is plenty, and on a heavy bar a half inch makes it much easier to line the ends up straight by hand.
Should I label around the length or around the width?
It depends on the shape and on how much information the label carries. A band around the width and height is shorter and cheaper, and it leaves the cut faces visible, which many makers prefer. A label around the length and width gives a longer, lower panel that suits more text or a list of ingredients. Both are calculated above: switch the wrap option and compare the two lengths before you commit to a template.
How many labels do I get from a sheet?
Fit whole label widths across the sheet and whole rows down it, then multiply. A 5.25 by 0.75 inch front label fits one across an 8.5 by 11 inch Letter sheet and fourteen rows down, so fourteen labels. A 12.5 inch full wrap fits none, because it is longer than the sheet is tall, and that is why the tool reports zero rather than a hopeful area figure. The area alone would allow nine of the short label and eleven of the long one, so treat the area figure as a ceiling and the layout figure as the one you will actually get. Check it against the template you are printing and allow for a wasted sheet or two on a print run.
Does a soap label need specific information on it?
It depends on where you sell and how the product is described, and the rules differ between selling a cosmetic and selling plain soap. Never guess: check the current requirement with the authority that regulates your market. If the label has to carry more text than the panel allows, price a second label for the back and use the packaging cost calculator to see what it adds to a bar.
