Invitation Size Generator

Pick an invitation size, envelope and insert set, and get the card sizes, the envelope code and the cutting list for the whole suite.

A wedding invitation is a suite rather than a card: the main invitation, a reply card, an information card and the envelopes that hold them, all in proportion to each other. This tool takes the shape and style of the invitation and returns the finished sizes for each piece, the envelope code that fits, and the cutting layout for the whole run, so a suite fits together before anything is printed.

Orientation
How many pieces in the suite

One per household, not one per guest. A wedding of 120 guests is often 60 to 70 invitations.

Spoilage is higher on a suite than on a single card, because every piece has to be right at the same time.

A suite of three heavy cards needs more clearance than a single card.

Frequently asked questions

What size should a wedding invitation be?
A6 at 105 by 148 millimetres is the standard handmade invitation and fits a C6 envelope, which is the cheapest and most widely stocked envelope there is. 5 by 7 inches at 127 by 178 millimetres is the formal size and fits an A7 envelope, and it is the more usual choice for a printed suite. Both are correct: A6 is the economical and handmade choice, 5 by 7 is the formal one.
How many invitations do I need for 120 guests?
Between 60 and 70, because an invitation goes to a household rather than to a person, and many households are a couple or a family. Add a spare allowance of ten to fifteen percent on top, which takes 65 invitations to about 75. Spares are not optional on a suite: if one piece of a three piece invitation is spoiled, the whole invitation is spoiled.
Should the reply card be a different size from the invitation?
Yes, and a little smaller. A reply card is normally about three quarters of the invitation width, which puts an A6 invitation with a small reply card and a 5 by 7 invitation with an A6 reply card. Making the inserts the same size as the invitation looks deliberate only if they are meant to be a set; in a stacked suite a smaller insert reads as correct proportion.
How heavy should invitation card be?
Between 250 and 350 gsm for the main invitation, and 200 to 250 gsm for the inserts. Above about 300 gsm a fold needs a score line, and if the invitation is flat there is no fold to worry about. The reason to keep the inserts lighter is total package thickness: three pieces of 350 gsm card plus envelopes will not sit flat inside a standard envelope.
What envelope takes a full invitation suite?
The same envelope that takes the invitation alone, as long as you allowed clearance for the thicker pile. A 5 by 7 inch suite fits an A7 envelope, which is 133 by 184 millimetres, giving a quarter inch of clearance per side. Test one assembled suite in one envelope before you buy envelopes for the whole run, because the reply card and its own envelope are the pieces that make a suite too thick.
