Paper Cost Calculator

Work out the cost of one sheet, one A4 equivalent and one finished piece from the price of a pack or a ream.

A ream price is a poor guide to what a card costs, because a ream of A4 and a ream of A3 contain quite different amounts of paper. This calculator turns a pack price into a cost per sheet, a cost per square metre and a cost per finished piece, so two paper options can be compared on the same footing whatever size they come in. It also carries the waste allowance through to the piece cost, because the offcut is paper you paid for.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a sheet of card cost?
It depends almost entirely on the pack size and the sheet format. A 250 sheet pack of 300 gsm A4 card at 20 dollars is eight cents a sheet. The same card in a 50 sheet pack at 12 dollars is twenty four cents a sheet, three times as much for identical paper. Buy the largest pack you will realistically use within a year, and store it flat and dry, because card that has picked up moisture from a damp workshop curls and misprints.
Why is cost per square metre more useful than cost per sheet?
Because sheet sizes differ. A pack of A3 card and a pack of A4 card can have a very similar price per sheet while the A3 sheet holds twice the paper. Cost per square metre removes the size from the comparison and tells you which paper is actually cheaper. Once you know the cost per square metre, you can also work out whether switching to a larger sheet to get a better cutting yield is worth the price difference.
Should I include the offcut in my costing?
Yes. You paid for the whole sheet and only some of it leaves the bench as a finished piece. This calculator applies the waste allowance to the sheet cost before dividing by the pieces, so a fifteen percent allowance raises the piece cost by fifteen percent. That is the honest figure. If you genuinely use the offcuts for another product, either lower the allowance or cost the offcuts into that second product instead.
What waste allowance should I use for paper crafts?
Ten percent is realistic when a cutting plan nests well and you are not printing. Twenty percent is more honest once printing is involved, because a misregistration, a paper jam or a smudged sheet wastes a whole piece and sometimes a whole sheet. Thirty percent is not unusual for a first run with a new design or a new printer. Track what you actually throw away over a few sessions rather than guessing.
Does delivery belong in the paper cost?
Yes, if you paid it. A delivery charge can be a significant share of a small order, and leaving it out makes paper look cheaper than it was. Divide the delivery across the whole order and add it to the pack price before you enter it here. The same applies to any cutting or trimming you pay a print shop to do: it is a material preparation cost and belongs in the paper line or in a separate line, but not nowhere.
