Paint Mixing Ratio Calculator

Work out how much medium, water or thinner to add to a quantity of paint at a given ratio.

A ratio is how painters describe consistency, and it is also the instruction most often quoted and least often converted into millilitres. A 1 to 3 wash means one part paint to three parts water, so 30 millilitres of paint needs 90 millilitres of water. This calculator turns a ratio and a paint volume into the medium to add, the total mixed volume and the coverage that volume will give.

Ratio of paint to medium

Only used when the choice above is set to the custom option.

The paint you are about to mix, in millilitres. A 37 ml tube is 37.

A thin wash behaves like a glaze at about 20 square metres per litre. Neat paint is nearer 10.

Used for the total area this batch will cover.

Frequently asked questions

What does a 1 to 3 paint ratio mean?
One part paint to three parts medium, by volume. So 30 millilitres of paint takes 90 millilitres of medium, and the mixed batch is 120 millilitres that is 25 percent paint. That is a wash: it stains the surface rather than covering it, and it is usually applied over a dry layer so the medium does the spreading.
Is a 1 to 3 ratio the same as adding 33 percent medium?
No, and this is the most common mistake in mixing. Adding 33 percent medium to 30 millilitres of paint gives 40 millilitres total, which is 75 percent paint: a ratio of about 1 to 0.33, not 1 to 3. A true 1 to 3 ratio triples the volume and makes the mix 25 percent paint. Always convert a ratio into parts of medium per part of paint before measuring.
What ratio should I use for a glaze?
Most glazes sit between 1 to 1 and 1 to 3, depending on how much colour you want to build per layer. A 1 to 1 glaze is nearly half paint and covers in one or two passes; a 1 to 3 glaze is subtle and usually needs three or four passes to reach the same depth. Glazing medium rather than water keeps the binder ratio sound, which matters more with acrylics than with oils.
Can I thin acrylic paint with water?
A little water is fine, and most acrylic painters use it for the first layers. Too much water dilutes the binder as well as the pigment, and an underbound film can be chalky, prone to lifting, or uneven in sheen. As a working guide, once you are past about 30 percent water, use a proper acrylic medium instead, which adds binder and medium rather than only thinning. Follow the paint manufacturer data sheet for their product.
How much does the ratio change the coverage?
A great deal, because the medium is doing the spreading. Neat paint at 10 square metres per litre and a 1 to 3 wash at 20 square metres per litre means the same 30 millilitres of paint covers 0.3 square metres neat but 2.4 square metres as a wash, because the mixed volume is four times larger and goes twice as far. That is why a wash is the economical way to tone a large background and the wrong way to build an opaque passage.
