Scarf Yarn Calculator

Yarn estimates for scarves, cowls and infinity scarves by style, with the usual dimensions prefilled.

A scarf is a small project with an outsized capacity for surprise, because the difference between a short decorative scarf and a long winter scarf is two or three skeins. This calculator prefills the standard scarf and cowl dimensions and estimates the yarn from your own gauge.

Frequently asked questions

How much yarn do I need for a scarf?
A classic 8 by 65 inch scarf in worsted weight usually takes 400 to 500 yards, which is two to three standard skeins. A long winter scarf at 10 by 75 inches can take 600 yards or more. A lace weight scarf of the same size can take half that because the fabric is much finer.
How long should a scarf be?
For wearing under a coat, 65 to 70 inches is a good length for most adults, and 75 to 80 inches if you like to loop it. A scarf shorter than 55 inches tends to come untucked. If you are making it as a gift, err on the longer side because a long scarf can be wrapped and a short one cannot be stretched.
How much extra yarn does a fringe need?
Roughly ten percent of the body yardage for a medium fringe, and more if the fringe is long or dense. Each strand of fringe is twice the finished fringe length plus a little for the knot, so thirty strands of six inch fringe uses about ten yards.
Why do ribbed scarves use more yarn?
Ribbing pulls in horizontally, so the finished fabric is narrower than the same number of stitches in stockinette. To reach the same width you work more stitches, and more stitches means more yarn. A ribbed scarf can use a fifth more yarn than a plain one of the same size.
