Shelf Bracket Spacing Calculator

How many brackets a shelf needs and how far apart to fix them, from the shelf material, thickness and expected load.

A shelf that sags does it between the brackets, not at them, so the spacing is the whole decision. A 20 millimetre hardwood shelf spans about 900 millimetres unsupported, an 18 millimetre MDF shelf only about 600, and a heavy load shortens both again. This calculator works out the number of brackets, the spacing between them and the overhang at each end, so the shelf arrives flat and stays flat.

The full length of the board, end to end.

Shelf material

Hardwood and birch plywood hold a span far better than board of the same thickness.

MDF is commonly 15, 18 or 25 mm. Hardwood shelves are usually 20 to 25 mm.

Everything on the shelf, spread along its length. A metre of paperbacks is roughly 25 kg.

No more than 150 mm, or the ends will droop. The tool shortens it automatically when the shelf is short.

Optional. Used for the bracket cost.

How to use the Shelf Bracket Spacing Calculator

  1. 1 Enter Shelf length (mm), The full length of the board, end to end.
  2. 2 Enter Shelf material, Hardwood and birch plywood hold a span far better than board of the same thickness.
  3. 3 Enter Shelf thickness (mm), MDF is commonly 15, 18 or 25 mm. Hardwood shelves are usually 20 to 25 mm.
  4. 4 Enter Total load the shelf will carry (kg), Everything on the shelf, spread along its length. A metre of paperbacks is roughly 25 kg.
  5. 5 Enter Distance from each end to the first bracket (mm), No more than 150 mm, or the ends will droop. The tool shortens it automatically when the shelf is short.
  6. 6 Enter Price per bracket, Optional. Used for the bracket cost.
  7. 7 Press Calculate. You get Brackets needed, Spacing between brackets, Spacing between brackets, Distance from each end to the first bracket, Overhang beyond the end brackets, Maximum span to use, Load each bracket carries, Millimetres of shelf per kilogram, Cost of the brackets, and every intermediate step stays visible under "How is this calculated?"
  8. 8 Change one number at a time to see what moves the result, that is usually the most useful thing a calculator can tell you.

A working span of 576 millimetres, reduced to 576 at 40 kg. The 1500 millimetre run between the end brackets needs 3 spaces, so 4 brackets at 500 millimetres apart and 9.6 kilograms on each.

Hardwood at 20 millimetres spans 900 millimetres, so the 2100 millimetre run needs 3 spaces: 4 brackets at 700 millimetres apart. The same shelf in 18 millimetre board would need 5.

Frequently asked questions

How far apart should shelf brackets be?
It depends on the material, the thickness and the load. An 18 millimetre MDF shelf carries a moderate load over about 600 millimetres between brackets, a 25 millimetre MDF shelf about 750 millimetres, and a 20 millimetre hardwood shelf about 900 millimetres. Reduce those figures for a heavy load and increase them for a light one. A bracket should also sit no more than 150 millimetres from each end of the shelf, whatever the spacing works out to.
How many brackets does a 1800 mm shelf need?
With an 18 millimetre MDF board carrying about 40 kilograms, the working span is 600 millimetres and the brackets sit 150 millimetres in from each end, which leaves a 1500 millimetre run. That run divides into 3 spaces of 500 millimetres, so 4 brackets in total. The same shelf in 20 millimetre hardwood spans 900 millimetres, which needs only 2 spaces and therefore 3 brackets.
Why does my shelf sag in the middle?
Because the distance between the brackets is too great for the material and the load. Board creeps under a sustained load, so a shelf that looks fine when it is installed can bow over a year of carrying books. Adding a bracket in the middle is almost always cheaper than replacing the board, because the new bracket hides under the shelf. A stiffener glued and screwed along the back edge, or a deeper section of timber, is the other fix.
Does a thicker board mean fewer brackets?
Yes, and quite steeply, because stiffness rises with roughly the cube of the thickness. Going from 18 to 25 millimetre MDF takes the working span from about 600 to about 750 millimetres, which on a 2 metre shelf can remove a whole bracket. Changing the material is often even better value: a 20 millimetre hardwood shelf spans 900 millimetres where an 18 millimetre board manages 600, and the hardwood also takes a fixing better at the ends.
Will plasterboard hold a loaded shelf?
Plasterboard on its own is not a sound fixing for a loaded shelf, because the load is carried by a thin skin of paper and gypsum. Fix into the timber studs or the masonry behind the plasterboard wherever you can find them, and where a stud does not fall in the right place use a fixing designed and rated for the load in that substrate, following its instructions. For anything heavy, or a shelf that will be leaned on, use a braced bracket rather than a flat L bracket, and ask someone qualified if you are unsure what is behind the plaster.
